A home repair scam is better than burglary. That's what a suburban man allegedly told police officers after being arrested Thursday afternoon for taking money from Ashburn residents for home repairs he never made.
Among those residents was a 91-year-old woman who suffers from dementia, officials said Friday. The woman wrote J.R. Miller, 28, two checks for a total of $9,400 after he allegedly offerered to do repair work around her chimney and her house also and seal her foundation this winter, according to the police report.
State prosecutors said Miller merely "sprayed" something around the house before charging her. Miller also allegedly took $200 from another home resident for services he did not provide, according to court records.
Miller, who was arrested at his residence in the 8000 block of South Marion Drive in Justice, Ill., appeared at the Cook County Criminal Courthouse on Friday and was held on a $75,000 bond.
