A taste of the doughnut sandwich

You've already heard that Dunkin' Donuts just launched a new menu item, the glazed doughnut breakfast sandwich, so we can go ahead and skip that part, right? Because I spent most of my day on Wednesday, when it was announced, gabbing in excitement and disbelief about this thing that is allegedly only 390 calories, and you just want to know if it's good or not, right? Right, moving on.

Before we begin, I need you to pull your judgmental "Fat America!" head out of the sand and consider a few things: A) What's wrong with doughnuts in moderation? Calm down. B) You'd think it'd be a calorie bomb, but it's made with egg whites and turkey bacon, so, ha! C) DOUGHNUT BREAKFAST SANDWICH. Now that we've agreed to just savor the moment, let's begin.

After checking at three Loop and Streeterville Dunkin' Donuts locations, I was finally able to find one that was actually even serving it -- and then that place was pretty sure it was out of glazed doughnuts already (they weren't, so I ordered three).

The glazed doughnut breakfast sandwich does not look like its photo, sorry. That's kind of what happens when you smush two halves of room-temperature glazed doughnut together with a hot fried egg and turkey bacon and wrap it to-go. It's also a little smaller in circumference than I imagined, but at about $3 a pop, it's a totally decent value.

After carefully unwrapping the sticky glazed bread substitute--seriously, careful, this thing easily falls apart--you'll probably notice a semi-funky smell that we attributed to the rubbery turkey bacon (my coworker likened it to "syrup farts"). And it, the bacon, basically tastes like it smells. The doughnut, while pleasantly sticky and a little fragile, makes for the perfect "sweet" component to pair with the "savory," though we definitely would have preferred a "savory" turkey sausage (real sausage, though, if we're being honest).

If you're a breakfast sandwich fiend like me, odds are you'll appreciate the hell out of this creation, particularly on a morning that calls for some sticky sweetness without the leftover guilt it usually runs you (my favorite Dunkin menu item, the sausage croissant breakfast sandwich, clocks in at 650 calories).

The verdict: NAILED IT.
