Like many Chicagoans, Stanley got a picture taken with the Cup.
Stanley, identified initially as a male pitbull at the city's Animal Care and Control shelter, was scooped up on Monday by One Tail at a Time rescue group after being given up by a family a few days ago.
Turns out the three-month-old pup was female and in danger of being euthanized.
"She is adorable and she's got those big ears and is really playful and sweet," said Heather Owen, One Tail at a Time board president. Owen made the trip to the shelter after being contacted by Chicago Loves Pits, the organization founded by Hawks player Bryan Bickell and his fiance, Amanda Caskenette.
They wanted to rescue a pit bull in honor of the Stanley Cup, Owen said. On Tuesday, the couple met Stanley the pup at Belmont Harbor.
"You can tell they're super big dog lovers. They absolutely loved her and were playing with her," Owen said. Even though the puppy was a little mouthy, the couple wasn't fazed. The pup is exuberant, loves playing with her toys and has learned the "sit" command in a day, Owen said.
Now, Miss Stanley the Pup is featured as Bick's Pit of the Month for July."Having the backing of someone who people respect and look up to right now is really special and she's a real lucky dog to have that," Owen said. "It brings awareness to adoption in general and how many good dogs there are looking for homes and that adoption is a great route."
Much like Lord Stanley the cup, Stanley the pup can be followed on Twitter by using #puptracker. The dog will stay at a foster home for a week before she can go to her new home.
Adoption applications are being accepted. Click here for more info.
