They don't call it "bike share" because you have to share the sidewalk with them.
Three weeks since the city debuted its bike sharing program, Divvy, city officials say they are reminding the program's fledgling members that the sidewalk is off-limits.
But not everyone is listening; sidewalk cyclers have been spotted in the past week on the Near North Side. On the tourism-heavy day after the Fourth of July, one rider weaved up the Magnificent Mile for multiple blocks, ringing the bell on his Divvy bike repeatedly at pedestrians as he passed.
Pete Scales, a spokesman for the Chicago Department of Transportation, which oversees Divvy, said riders are instructed to walk bikes on the sidewalk when they sign up for a membership to the program, and reminded via a set of "rules of the road" displayed on each bike's handlebar stem cap.
Scales said Divvy's customer service hotline has not received any complaints.
