Doors closing--forever

The accordion doors are closing. The CTA on Thursday is retiring its 2200-series cars with the folding doors that currently run on the Blue Line.

The cars, which were built in 1969 and 1970, were sometimes a source of frustration for riders with disabilities and O'Hare-bound riders with luggage.

The cars have been replaced by newer cars as the CTA upgrades its fleet with the 5000-series cars with the aisle-facing seats.

The CTA will hold a farewell event for the cars at 10:05 a.m. Thursday. An eight-car train, with 1970s advertising and decals, will depart Rosemont and run nonstop to Jefferson Park.
