Free haircuts offered for CPS students

Finally, some welcome change for CPS students.

Powell's Barber Shop, at 1139 W. 63rd Street, is offering free haircuts to all CPS students on Sept. 3 and 4. Sunni Powell, the owner of Powell's Barber Shop, came up with the event to give students a fresh start for a new school year.

"When they look good, they feel good," said Powell, who is also a master barber at his shop and a lifelong Englewood resident.

Powell's Barber Shop hosted its first free haircut event last year, at which Powell estimated there were more than 50 attendees. Due to its growing popularity, Powell has instituted a coupon system for the second year, in which those who bring in coupons will be given a haircut, free of charge.

For Powell, the event is as much an act of charity as it is an act of pride. With the motto "We are the heart of Englewood" proudly associated with the shop's name, Powell expressed concern when speaking of those who "walk in the street with their pants down."

"When we grew up, people had respect for property and adults," said Powell, 42, who opened his barber shop three years ago. "Now, they have none for their families, property or themselves."

Despite the changing face of the community, Powell remains a proud Englewood resident and business owner.

"I am so blessed to have this business," Powell said. "It feels good to be a role model for the community."
