Some of the bravest-if not craziest-athletes on the planet are returning to the Chicago area. The Professional Bull Riders bring their Built Ford Tough Series to Allstate Arena on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are available at ticketmaster.com.
But while the riders get the prize money, they're not the only ones putting their bodies on the line. The Dickies Durabullfighters are charged with distracting the bulls once the rider is thrown off.
Redeye spoke to Shorty Gorham, 30, and Jesse Byrne, 27, both Durabullfighters, about how they go about such risky business.
What are your best assets for someone who protects riders from bulls?
Shorty Gorham: Bull savvy (knowing the natural movement and behavior of bovine); mind control (the ability to control fear, stay calm and stay focused in any situation no matter how out of control or dangerous it gets); a team mentality (the will to work together as a team. A bullfighter who wants all the glory is dangerous, often doing more harm than good).
Jesse Byrne: Quick reaction time, knowledge of livestock and endless amounts of determination!
What's the worst injury you've ever sustained at your job?
SG: Shattered my left shoulder in 2006 in Tulsa, Okla.
JB: Most pain was broken ribs/bruised kidney. Longest time sidelined was four weeks with knee injury requiring surgery.
What are the bulls like when they're not being ridden? Do any have a friendly temperament?
SG: The bulls are a lot like humans. Each bull has its own personality. Some want to be left alone, some are always angry, but many are very docile and friendly. At feeding time you will often find a stock contractor (bull owner) or their bull handler scratching or petting some of their bulls. Contrary to popular belief, the bulls do not have to be mean or wild to be great athletes.
JB: Each bull definitely has their own personality. They know the difference between when it's time for rest/relaxation and when it's time for work!
If you had a pet bull, what would you name him?
SG: I definitely wouldn't have a pet bull!
JB: His name would be Pet-a-bull unless he was a guard bull!
