Step back into the age of dapper flappers and kings of swing: In celebration of Black History Month, Porchlight Music Theatre transports audiences to the 1920s and '30s Harlem Renaissance with "Ain't Misbehavin'." The 1978 Tony Award-winning musical features sassy, sultry and humorous songs made famous by 1920s composer-performer Fats Waller, reflecting the emotions and experiences of African-American artists during this era of exploding creativity, social change and pride.
Porchlight's production, directed by Brenda Didier, recreates the heartbeat of Jazz Age Harlem-where music ruled along Lenox Avenue in dive piano bars and high-society night spots including the Savoy Ballroom and the Cotton Club-with a live, five-piece band and a cast of five local actors. We checked with them to find out more about their roles in the show, how they personally like to misbehave and more.
