A vacant building in Roseland on Monday became the 200th "dangerous building" demolished by the city since the summer to stop gangs from using them as an illegal activity haven.
Demolition of the property at 13 E. 113th St. was part of a city initiative between the police and buildings departments in which they identify and determine which structures are sites for gang activity and have received calls for service, and whether the vacant buildings should be boarded up and secured or demolished, according to a city-issued news release.
The 100th building under the initiative was demolished Aug. 31.
"Demolishing these buildings prevents them from serving as hubs of illegal activity and eliminates a blight on our communities," Mayor Emanuel said in a news release.
"Since early July, the Chicago Police Department and the Department of Buildings have worked together to reduce the number vacant and hazardous properties, preventing criminal activity in our neighborhoods."
