Swimmy, er, Jimmy Fallon's plunge into the lake is about to break some records.
More than 3,000 people have now signed up for this year's Polar Plunge -- which benefits Special Olympics Chicago -- splashing way past last year's number of 2,300. According to Special Olympics Chicago president Jen Kramer, donations have spiked too, and with a little social media support, she believes this year's event will raise more than $1,000,000.
"We've seen a massive uptick in people who want to participate and donate," she said. "We accomplished #jimmyplungewithus, and got #polarplungechi trending, now we want to accomplish #payitforwardfallon."
She said the non-profit is currently in talks with Fallon's representatives to set up a funding page for him before the plunge on Sunday, so that fans can donate. She said just one tweet from Fallon about donations would "blow the roof off" the event.
Kramer also said more heating tents, beverages and seating is being brought in to accomodate for the larger than normal crowds. While she said there's no suggested donation to just watch the event, she hopes people will consider donating if they come to stargaze. A $20 donation to sochicago.org will net spectators a #swimmyfallon t-shirt.
"Every single dollar makes a difference," she said.
Those going to watch the event at North Avenue Beach should bundle up, she said. Both the Mayor and Fallon are set to dip first, around 10 a.m. The opening ceremonies start at 9:30 a.m.
