Free-agent quarterback Josh McCown agreed to terms Wednesday with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on a two-year contract.
Sources said the deal is worth $10 million, with a maximum value of $15 million.
McCown rejoins former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith in Tampa Bay, where he'll have the opportunity to start.
"He leaves with a heavy heart because he had such a special time in Chicago," McCown's agent Mike McCartney said. "But obviously Josh is thrilled for the chance to go play for the Bucs and Lovie Smith."
The Bears never made McCown a formal contract offer, McCartney said.
"We all want to congratulate Josh," Bears general manager Phil Emery said. "We're very proud for him."
The agreement leaves veteran Jordan Palmer as Jay Cutler's backup. Palmer has played in four career games, none since 2010.
"We like Jordan Palmer," Emery said. "He's a guy that fit in incredibly quick. He fit in in the (quarterbacks meeting) room and has a strong arm."
Emery added: "We're going to look at the draft for an opportunity to add to our quarterback roster," and said one also could be acquired later via free agency.
McCown threw 13 touchdowns and only one interception in eight games last season. He started five in place of the injured Cutler.
