City proposes Segway restrictions

Segways are facing new rules when it comes to how many can be in a tour group, how fast they can go and where they aren't allowed.

If more than three tourists are riding Segways in a tour group, they would not be allowed to go more than 8 miles per hour on the public way, under a proposed amendment introduced by Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) on Wednesday.

No more than eight Segways would be allowed as part of a tour group, the proposal said.

Also Segways would be prohibited on the Navy Pier Flyover, which is a 16-foot-wide overpass that will span along Lake Shore Drive from Jane Addams Park to the Chicago River bridge.

There was nothing in the proposal that mentions or would ban Segway riders from getting on Lake Shore Drive, like one did last June.

Tour leaders would face a $25 to $200 fine if found in violation of the ordinance.

The Committee on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety will consider the measure.
