A doctor with the Chicago Eye Institute was arrested Tuesday afternoon after he was accused of videotaping four women in a restroom and a locker room at his offices in Lakeview and Irving Park.
Robert Weiss, 58, surrendered to police Tuesday, and was charged with four counts of unauthorized videotaping. An investigation had revealed he had been secretly taping at least two women in a locker room at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, 836 W. Wellington Ave., and another two in a restroom at the Eye Institute's second location at 3982 N. Milwaukee Ave.
One woman, age 27, discovered a small camera Velcroed to the inside of a toilet tank in a restroom at the Eye Institute on April 2 while she was using the facility, a police report said. She notified a business representative who filed a police report and turned the camera in to police, the report said. An investigation found that another woman also had been taped at that location on April 2, while between March 25 and April 2 two other women were taped inside a fifth floor locker room at Illinois Masonic.
Each of the four women was able to identify herself as a person on the tapes, the report said.
Weiss, of the 900 block of South Michigan Avenue, was brought to the Cook County Leighton Criminal Courthouse Wednesday afternoon and ordered held in lieu of $75,000 bond.
Weiss's attorney, Aaron Goldstein, told Judge Laura Sullivan that Weiss was "In no way a threat," sees over 100 patients a week, and has never been arrested before.
Dr. Kathleen Shea, a representative of the Chicago Eye Institute, would not comment on Weiss's employment status with the institute. She said in a statement that the institute "is dedicated to the well being and safety of its patients and its employees and whenever an issue arises that conceivably poses a risk, the institute acts promptly to thoroughly investigate and address any and all aspects of the problem."
When asked whether Weiss still worked at the institute, she declined to answer but said, "We have taken measures to ensure that the statement I read to you is true."
