One hundred per week.

That's the average number of illegally possessed guns the Chicago Police Department has seized from alleged criminals each week this year, according to a department announcement Monday.

CPD has seized more than 1,500 firearms total so far in 2014, Superintendent Garry McCarthy said at a Monday press conference, where he also renewed city officials' calls for more strict state and federal gun laws.

Police officials say CPD recovers more illegal firearms than any other police department in the country. In 2013, the police department reported that it seized 6,813 firearms from the streets, down from 7,400 in 2012.

Some of the guns were likely used to commit crimes, while others were seized from people who officers learned were carrying guns without proper licensing.

The announcement came just a day after Chicago experienced one of its bloodiest weekends of the year, with four people killed and at least 33 people wounded in shootings around the city.
