Making bets

Mayor Emanuel on Tuesday appeared on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," showing photos of the two after they emerged from icy Lake Michigan as part of the Polar Plunge in March.

"I came out, I heard bagpipes," Fallon said in a clip from the show NBC shared with RedEye prior to airing. "I looked around for bagpipers, because when you're Irish that's what you hear when you die."

"You know what the difference is? I heard 'Hava Nagila,'" Emanuel said, referring to the celebratory Jewish folk song.

Emanuel said he would appear on "The Tonight Show" only if Fallon took his bet to do the Plunge. The mayor also took a dive after challenging Chicago students to read 2 million books.

On Tuesday's show, the pair agreed to another bet: If Chicago kids read 2.4 million books this summer (or 2.5 million, Emanuel mentioned both numbers), Fallon will tape a show in Chicago.

"I'd love to go to Chicago," Fallon said, after much prodding from Emanuel. "Deal. I'll do that."

And they shook on it, so Chicago students, start reading.

The full episode is below, and Emanuel stops in at about the 30-minute mark:
