The Clone Club has been shut out again. "Orphan Black" star Tatiana Maslany leads the list of most egregiously snubbed in the 2014 Emmy nominations.
Nominations announced Thursday morning were as usual both exciting and infuriating. There are far too many shows out there for voters to see everything, so you know they're just rubber stamping past nominees or the highest profile new ones.
Which kinda sucks for those of us who venture into genre TV and to the smaller networks. So without wasting any more time, here's my 2014 Emmys bitchlist.
5 MAJOR SNUBS
Tatiana Maslany, "Orphan Black"
Maslany shouldn't be nominated for the novelty of playing multiple characters in BBC America's clone classic, but because each of her characters is so different she makes you forget she's playing multiple characters. I do not understand.
Melissa McBride, "The Walking Dead"
I've considered McBride, who plays zombie survivor Carol, the best actor in the AMC hit since Season 1. She's gone from frightened abuse victim to fearless queen of the hard choices.
Bellamy Young, "Scandal"
Star Kerry Washington gets all the love as main character Olivia Pope, but my vote goes to Young, who plays the first lady and Pope's rival for the president's attention.
Charlie Hunnam and Maggie Siff, "Sons of Anarchy"
"SoA" and its actors traditionally get the shaft and things were no different this year. This pair's star-crossed lovers should have made the cut. To quote Shakespeare: "For never was a story of more woe."
"The Americans"
It's hard to argue with the list of best drama nominees (well, "Downton Abbey" again?), but FX's spy drama was shunned from nearly all categories. Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell were deserving. At least Margo Martindale was nominated as guest actor.
SNUBS RUNNERS-UP
- Emmy Rossum of "Shameless"
- Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins of "Justified"
- James Spader of "The Blacklist"
- Charles Dance of "Game of Thrones"
- Vera Farmiga of "Bates Motel"
SURPRISES(yes, some nominations made me happy)
- Woody Harrelson joining Matthew McConaughey as "True Detective" nominees
- Lizzy Caplan of "Masters of Sex" earning a best lead actress nod
- A best comedy nomination for "Silicon Valley"
- Ricky Gervais's best comedy actor nomination for "Derek"
- Lena Headey's best supporting actress nod for "Game of Thrones"
- "Sherlock" and its stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, earning nominations
- William H. Macy's nomination for the oft-overlooked "Shameless"
- Kristen Wiig's nomination for "Spoils of Babylon"
- All the love for "Orange is the New Black" isn't surprising, but it does make me happy.
What Emmy nominations please you, and which snubs have your blood boiling?
