No Red Bull for you. Or Monster. Or 5-hour Energy shots.
That is, if you're under 21 years old, under a proposal by two Chicago aldermen to ban energy drinks.
Ald. George Cardenas (12th) and William Burns (4th) introduced an ordinance on Thursday that would make it unlawful to "sell, give away, barter, exchange or otherwise furnish any energy drink" to people under 21 years old.
An energy drink is defined in the proposal as a canned or bottled beverage which contains at least 180 milligrams of caffeine, Taurine or Guarana.
The proposed ordinance, which is referred to the City Council Committee on Health and Environmental Protection, would set a fine of $100 to $500 for retailers. Repeat offenses could result in suspension or revocation of city-issued business licenses.
The committee would need to advance the proposal in order for it to go to the City Council for approval.
