The early autumn in Chicago keeps everyone guessing as the weather vacillates between chilly mid-40s one day and sunny low 70s the next. These wardrobe staples are ideal for making the awkward transition in style.
1. LEATHER JACKET
Chicago fashion blogger Emily Charron of Isn't That Charming, suggests the trusty leather jacket as a go-to for both men and women this season. "For now, pair leather jackets with traditional summertime pieces like a crop top or shorts," Charron said. On cooler days, layer it up. "Try a jean vest over a white tee with a leather jacket on top, or a hoodie worn under the jacket. " She also recommends that gents play with plaid and flannel layers or opt for a tie for a more put-together look.
2. SLIM CROPPED PANTS
Already making waves on the runway, slim cropped slacks for men are surfacing as a new trend to try this fall. Timothy Grindle, manager of men's retailer Independence in the Gold Coast and Hyde Park, said men can try this look without making a huge investment. "You can take a pair of trousers to your dry cleaner and have them hemmed up above your ankle and you're good to go." Grindle suggests this look to show off details such as colorful socks or statement sneakers. He does, however, warn against hemming the pants too high, which could be mistaken for a summer get-up.
3. MIDI SKIRT
For women, a popular piece this year is the midi skirt. A skirt grazing just past the knee is an excellent option for fall, according to Chicago blogger Zahra Sandberg of Love Zahra. "During summer and early fall, I like to pair my midi skirt with a silk camisole and strappy sandals." When temperatures dip, Sandberg recommends throwing over a sweatshirt in a fun print. "I'd go with a knit cropped top, top it with an oversized jacket and finish off the colder weather look with a pair of tall boots."
4. PUFFY VEST
Seth Putnam, one of the fashionable men behind the blog The Midwestyle, said that puffy vests are a perfect transitional piece for autumn in Chicago. "When days are hot but nights are cold, it's all about keeping your core warm with a vest over a light summer shirt," Putnam said. "Once the chill in the air is here to stay, use it as a layering tool over a light blazer and a pair of trousers or sturdy jeans."
5. LONG-SLEEVED DRESS
Free People, aka the curator of all things bohemian chic, relies on the long-sleeved dress to transition between seasons. Southport store manager Rebecca Mangieri said to opt for simple accessories when it's warm and to layer up when the weather turns. "Slimmer-cut styles can be topped off with a slouchy boyfriend cardigan or jacket," she said. "For fuller skirts or shapeless styles, a moto jacket makes a great layer, especially if you add over-the-knee boots." Play with texture and proportion to keep warm and standout from a sea of pea coats.
