Welcome to another Wednesday Hump Day Link Dump Day.
Hat tip (H/t) to RedEye Social Media Lady Jessica Galliart (If you aren't already, you should follow her.) for that alternate name suggestion for Mick's Tape, my weekly round up of what's good on the web.
Here's the best of what I found visiting every single interweb this week.
Within minutes of the announcement that the first case of Ebola had been diagnosed in the U.S., the topic was trending on both Facebook and Twitter. Most tweets and statuses read roughly like "OMG EBOLA IS HERE I'M GOING TO DIE WTF SMDH." But this helpful primer from The Atlantic answers a very simple question: What would happen in the (highly unlikely) case you contracted Ebola? It's a good read for anyone, especially those whose primary care physician is WebMD.
>>Numbers: Reddit does the math
Could Kendrick Lamar fill a swimming pool of liquor? How much would a gallon of my semen cost? How much did all the blown up space junk in "Gravity" cost? Reddit's math dork conglomerate "r/theydidthemath" has the answers to these questions (and many more), and Esquire did a fantastic job of summarizing them as graphics. In Kendrick's case, the answer is yes, he could fill a big ol' pool with Jack Daniels and still have some of his $10 million net worth intact.
The announcement of a "Tetris" movie got me thinking, obviously, about how a film about falling bricks would incorporate a sex scene. So I Googled "Tetris sex." I should not have done that. I should NOT have done that. The link to what I found is NSFW for graphic depictions of pixelated angled brick sex.
>>Brainfood: The .GIFs influence on music videos
This YouTube video might as well be a Master's thesis. "The visual style of the animated .GIF is finding its way into the music video" is actually along the lines of what MY thesis would have been, if I ever went to grad school. From Snoop Dog to Dizzy Rascal to the XX, music videos are dissected one-by-one, pointing out their .GIF like styles. (Note: Forgive the guy for pronouncing .GIF as "Jife" at the beginning of this video. He corrects himself."
>>Pitch pile: Clooney for President?
Of the 1,443,431 (approximate) story pitches I received this week, one declaring "George Clooney for President" caught my eye. British gambling odds maker and bet taker William Hill announced this week it's giving Clooney a 20 to 1 shot at joining the 2016 presidential election, and a 500-to-1 shot to win. They claim after Clooney settles down with new bride Amal Alamuddin, the pair may have political ambitions. The William Hill website is blocked for U.S. users, so I took the liberty of masking my computer's location and checking out some more odds. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel currently has 33-to-1 odds at winning in 2016. And Michelle Obama holds a 100-to-1 shot at the Oval Office. Since I can't link you to the rest, clicking will take you to information about voter registration in Chicago. You know, in case you want to vote Clooney-Emanuel in 2016.
