From wheel-less Tek Dek to Marty McFly, a company is claiming to have invented a functioning hoverboard.
>>Video HERE if you're on a mobile device.
According to the Kickstarter campaign for Hendo Hover, the product prototype floats about 1 in. off the ground. Employing four disc-shaped "hover engines," the board builds a counteracting magnetic field to support its lift.
The catch? It currently floats atop only a non-ferromagnetic conductor-fancy talk for metals that are conductive but not magnetic, like aluminum. Hendo has created a compound of commonly available metals that fit the bill and says it is currently testing new surfaces.
The hoverboard is intended to be self-propelled. Users can stabilize and move the board by projecting force on the surface below.
The campaign is asking for $250,000 ahead of Monday, Dec. 15. It currently has raised about $63,000.
Donate or not, but great Scott! Marty McFly might finally become a reality, even if you won't be able to escape Biff on all surfaces.
Now might be the perfect time to mention that you can already buy Marty McFly's Air Mag shoes. Hoverboarding requires them, really.
