Shut up, D-Rose doubters

Chicago doesn't deserve Derrick Rose.

If that statement comes across as shocking, it's nothing compared with the blatant disrespect Rose has suffered in this town the past two years, particularly from the local radio and print media who wield the power to influence fan perception.

Here we are less than two weeks into the 2014-15 season and after sitting out four games with two sprained ankles, one well-known local sportswriter declared Derrick "damaged goods" and not tough enough mentally or physically.

Not tough enough? A kid from Englewood really? Why, because he seems to be unwilling to play through pain?

Well, playing through pain is what led to him suffering four more injuries in 2012 before finally tearing his ACL in the playoffs-without screaming in pain like most athletes do. Let's not forget that.

After practice Tuesday, Rose said his decision to be extra cautious with his body after suffering two knee injuries is because he's thinking about life after basketball. A moment of honesty and candor, something we ask for in professional athletes, led to another popular sports talk radio personality calling him selfish, but even worse and in no uncertain terms, dumb.

As someone who comes from the same part of town as Rose, I'm admittedly biased when it comes to him. But it seems unfathomable that someone who was born and raised here, is the best player the Bulls have had since Michael Jordan and is the only real chance the team has at winning a seventh NBA championship can't get more love from the hometown media who cover him.

No one knows how Rose's body feels. The pain in his knees, ankles or anywhere else affects him physically, not us. If he feels he can't be an elite player on the floor, why question his decision to sit? It's a shame someone who is so loyal to where he comes from and is one of this city's finest representatives receives this kind of treatment.

Yes, we all want to see Rose healthy and competing on the court. But questioning his toughness and intelligence crosses the line. The people driving these ridiculous narratives should be ashamed, especially since they'll all be kissing up to him and singing his praises should he actually lead the Bulls to a title. That's more disrespectful than anything.
