LADIES
Go metallic
"New Year's Eve is the one night when it's socially acceptable to dress like a disco ball," said Dani Malloy of Chicago blog Sewing & Cocktails. "Instead of a sparkly mini, I'd try rocking some gold brocade cigarette pants with a fun printed tee, edgy booties and some bling ... to keep it from looking prim."
Suit up
Think less Annie Hall and more Sharon Stone. Go with a billowy tuxedo blouse and dark trousers for instant drama. If a tuxedo shirt isn't your thing, try a sharp blazer, white tee, slim-cut pants and a sparkly statement necklace.
Mix and match
Hallie Borden of Andersonville boutique Milk Handmade suggested using casual pieces from your closet mixed with festive special-occasion threads. "Pull out that fabulous silk party skirt and pair it with your favorite vintage tee, or throw on a sequined top with your most worn-in jeans." There are no rules or dress code when you're in the company of friends, Borden said.
GENTS
Tie one on
Start with your weekend uniform of dark jeans and classic button-down, but add fun accessories to help you stand out. Try swapping your loafers for bright sneakers or adding patterned socks. If you usually wear traditional neckties, now's the perfect time to throw on a quirky bow tie. And if you already work the bow tie look, up the ante and wear one made from unconventional materials, like "Project Runway All Stars" cast member Justin LeBlanc's 3D-printed bow ties (jleblancdesign.com) or wood ones from Chicago-based Monties (shopmonties.com)
Velvet touch
To avoid blending in with the crowd, Reed Schmidt of Bucktown men's shop Apartment Number 9 said to pair a velvet two-button blazer with dark denim. "The luxe velvet fabrication adds a contemporary twist to an otherwise traditional jacket," he said.
Play with prints
If you're usually a little leery of a floral dress shirt or patterned blazer, New Year's is the best time to try something new. Wear a nice pair of dark trousers with a dress shirt in a fun print like floral or plaid. Complete this look with leather sneakers or sleek oxfords.
