Milder air is headed for Chicago, but the warmup will come at a price, with another shovelable snowfall and more cold weather expected before it arrives late in the week.
Gusty southwest winds will boost the mercury into the upper 20s Sunday, but snow should spread into the area from the south by late afternoon and continue much of Sunday night. Areas from the city south could receive as much as 4 inches of snow, with amounts tapering off to the north - with little more than a dusting expected in southern Wisconsin.
A shot of colder air will follow in the wake of the snow, with highs struggling to reach the lower 20s and single-digit or subzero lows at night. But by late week, a shift in the jet stream will deliver an influx of milder Pacific air to the Midwest. Temperatures should finally break above freezing, with the potential for area highs to approach 40 by the weekend.
