Men's hearts stripped bare of compassion for their fellow men.
Unclaimable plots becoming their own,
Or so they decree.
When whiteness falls glacial powder obscures, divulges.
Unshapes the shapes; eclipses the kindness.
Chill pushes razors through bone and soul
and spirits find no avenue to rest
as another piece of flotsam pretends to be a car.
Eydie M. Appleton is a lifelong Chicagoan who still marvels at the way snow changes the hearts of fellow Chicagoans and brings on the spirit of dibs. Although she understands the ideology of snow + labor required to move the snow = dibs, the practice still amazes her, especially when someone takes a spot he did not clean and keeps whatever item was placed to hold the spot.
