And the honeymoon period begins. With Marc Trestman taking over as Bears coach, fans have every reason to believe Super Bowl victories are just a matter of time. Or to think it will all come crashing down again. So because fans are so full of hope (and pessimism) right now, RedEye presents five reasons why Trestman will lead the Bears to Super Bowl glory. (And five reasons why that's not gonna happen.)
WILL: He has a law degree and has written articles for Sports Illustrated, so he has a way with words.
WON'T: He might object-er, challenge-at the wrong time. We don't need another Lovie Smith where that's concerned.
WILL: He's coordinated several prolific offenses, including in San Francisco and Oakland.
WON'T: They play with only three downs in the CFL, so his offense is only three-quarters developed.
WILL: On his website, he's listed as a quarterback consultant, having worked with Steve Young, Rich Gannon-even Jay Cutler and Jason Campbell.
WON'T: On the same site, he also lists Tim Tebow as a QB he has helped mold. Ask the Denver Broncos and N.Y. Jets how that's worked out.
WILL: As a Minneapolis native having recently lived in Montreal, he's used to the cold. That's good. No wusses allowed.
WON'T: If cold-weather losses in recent years have taught us anything, it's that this team can't rely on "Bear weather" as an advantage.
WILL: He's captured two Grey Cup championships in the Canadian Football League. Chicago fans love a winner.
WON'T: Um, have you SEEN the Bears' offensive line? And their aging defense? He's gonna need magic powers to fix all this.
So good luck, Marc. Chicago fans are pulling for you. (That part is true regardless.)
