The old police station a couple blocks away from Wrigley Field may be turned into a LGBT senior housing development.
Mayor Emanuel on Wednesday proposed giving a $5 million loan plus $1.5 million in low-income housing tax credits to Halsted Limited Partnership to help refurbish the now-shuttered police station that was built in 1907 at the corner of Halsted and Addison Streets in Lakeview.
Chicago Police stopped using the building when a new station was built a block away in 2010.
The $27 million proposed development calls for a 79-unit apartment complex that would have mainly studios and one-bedroom units, according to a news release issued by the mayor's office. In addition to rehabbing the police station, there would be a new six-story apartment building on vacant adjacent land. Also, there would be ground-floor retail space facing Halsted Street.
"The assistance is designed to provide important housing options for Lake View seniors as well as preserve one of the community's most prominent and iconic buildings," Emanuel said.
The proposal heads to the City Council Finance Committee for consideration.
