Thirty-six thousand runners applied for the 15,000 spots left in the Chicago Marathon, a spokeswoman for the event said Friday.
Marathon officials will notify runners who won the online lottery by Tuesday. Selected runners have until Thursday to finalize their registration.
Runners had two days this week to sign up for the lottery, which was instituted after Web problems forced marathon officials to shut down registration last month.
Thirty thousand runners were able to sign up while registration was open for hours last month. The Oct. 13 race costs $175 for U.S. participants.
The marathon sold out in six days last year, a record.
