She's provocative, edgy and innovative. So wouldn't Lady Gaga fans expect that from her signature fragrance?

Her perfume Fame is launching at Macy's on State Street (111 N. State St.) on Thursday--one of only seven stores that get the fragrance a week before it's available nationwide Aug. 22.

Of course, Lady Gaga has put her own unique, creative stamp on it, like she does with everything from music to fashion. Little monsters will find her first fragrance to appear black in color in the bottle "like the soul of fame" but transparent once it's airborne, as it says on the box.

So what does fame smell like exactly? Well, according to the photo of the box Lady Gaga tweeted on June 13: "Tears of Belladonna, crushed heart of tiger orchidea with a black veil of incense, pulverized apricot, and the combinative essences of saffron and honey drops."

Her scent will be sold exclusively at Macy's with a price tag of $55 for 1.7 ounces and $79 for 3.4 ounces.

We sniffed and tested it. Here's what we think:

The bottle for Lady Gaga's perfume, Fame, looks futuristic, but the gold cap reminds me of the mechanical claw on the grab-a-prize game at Chuck E. Cheese. The bottle is filled with black liquid (colorless when sprayed), but the scent isn't spicy or reminiscent of black licorice. It's surprisingly quite floral-probably from the orchid in it-with a hint of powder and sweet notes thanks to the honey and apricot. Beware, this is not a daytime, light fragrance. Fame is more sensual and intense, making it best suited for a night out-when you won't be able to tell if you're succumbing to the effects of its mysterious ingredient called "tears of belladonna," or if you're just slurring your speech after having had one too many drinks.
