A new reality TV special about the Stroger Hospital trauma unit will air next month.
"Chicago Trauma" features two surgeons in their 40s leading a trauma team as they treat some of the city's most violent cases. The one-hour show will air at 9 p.m., Sept. 4 on the National Geographic Channel.
"This show is a very real look at what this medical staff does," said Marisa Kollias, a Cook County Health and Hospitals System spokeswoman. "It's a good eye-opener as to what trauma really means."
The show was taped in April and May, which saw a combined 92 homicides in Chicago, according to RedEye homicide data.
Kollias said the unit typically handles gunshot and stabbing victims and those who have been in car crashes, among other trauma cases.
"What we are doing is pretty much opening the doors to the unit and giving people a look into how this medical staff can really save a life on the line," Kollias said.
The show was produced by Chicago-based 20 West Productions.
This is the first time the hospital has been featured in a reality special, and there may be a series in the future, Kollias said.
