The subzero temperatures might be keeping most of Chicago indoors today, but not the local deliverymen.
The extreme weather has forced some local restaurants to close for the day, but others are seeing a surge in delivery orders from cooped up residents and office workers who don't want to venture outside to pick up food.
Leona's restaurant on East 53rd Street in Hyde Park saw double the usual lunch orders, according to its manager, Pedro Vazquez.
"All our locations are delivering today," he said. "I have three drivers right now and they say they're OK; they're taking a little bit more time than normal, but they're not complaining about it."
Vazquez said patrons can expect to wait up to an hour and 15 minutes today for deliveries.
Javier Barragan, an employee at the Jimmy John's sandwich shop on Madison Street in the Loop, said workers are running out to make deliveries today by bicycle and on foot.
"We just make sure they're well suited up before we send them out," he said.
Pai Tsang, chef of the Old Town restaurant Original Tsang, said he decided to keep the restaurant closed today because his driver's car was having trouble starting in the cold.
"Tomorrow," he said confidently when asked when he might re-open, "but not today."
