City yanking dibs

Streets and Sanitation crews resumed garbage collection on Tuesday as other workers continue to clear the streets of snow.

Once the city has completed plowing the streets, debris like plastic furniture used to save parking spaces on the streets will be removed, said Molly Poppe, spokeswoman for the Streets and Sanitation department.

A number of aldermen in their newsletters have discouraged the tradition of "dibs" to save shoveled parking spots. It's also become a sore subject for residents who take time to dig out their car and spot, move their car to run errands only to return and see that somebody else quickly parked there.

"Streets and Sanitation does not condone the practice of dibs.  Instead, we ask Chicagoans to be good neighbors and be responsible and respectful of each other," Poppe said in an email.
