What do 27 pound of lube and 1,000 condoms have in common? They are part of Northwestern University's annual sex week.
Sex Week is in full-swing with a full schedule that features question-and-answer sessions about dating, a sexy comedy night, a discussion examining the relationship between Christianity and sexuality and, of course, a whole a lot of free condoms and lube.
Sex Week director Kyra Jones, a 20-year-old junior and majoring in theater and gender studies, received the lube shipment (donated by Las Vegas-based Empowered Products) in a box so big the deliveryman couldn't help but say something about it.
"It was a big, big box, and the delivery guy was like, 'What'cha got there? Someone send you a million dollars?'" Jones said. "I was like, 'If only you knew.'"
Sex Week 2013, organized by Northwestern's College Feminists, opened Saturday with a burlesque show, a first for the weeklong event. Since then, the week has played host to a sex and policy panel luncheon, a panel discussion on women and sexuality in hip-hop called "Bad A$$ MCs and Big Booty Beauties" and a drag queen makeup tutorial.
Also on the schedule are two events that explore the relationship between sexuality and certain religions-- Christianity and Judaism--and an appearance from Laci Green, a 23-year-old sex positive video blogger from San Francisco who produces popular sex education videos for YouTube. She also hosts web shows for Discovery Channel and Planned Parenthood.
During her Wednesday night talk, "Clit-ical Thinking: An Intimate Evening with YouTube Sensation Laci Green," she will answer questions related to sexuality and dating. Jones said Green has a great way of explaining aspects of sex that are normally plagued with misconceptions.
"She's a really valuable resource," Jones said. "The internet can give out a lot of really bad information about sex, but Laci is an awesome demonstration of what the internet can do for sex education."
One of the organizers behind Sex Week, Sarah Watson, a 19-year-old sophomore majoring in social policy, said support from the university is what makes Sex Week so successful year after year.
"The administration realizes that [sex education] is an important issue," Watson said. "NU tends to be a more progressive campus in terms of these issues, so it's just really, really receptive."
Watson said choosing the week's events is all about talking to students at Northwestern and finding out what they'd like to see offered.
"People come to these events because they relate to them. Our approach is, 'By students, for students,'" Watson said. "Sex Week does a great job of taking the interests of people and putting them into the events. We ask other students, 'What are you interested in, what are your friends interested in, how can we make people come to our events and learn something?'"
"Plus--we give out a lot of free lube and free condoms."
